General Assistance

Purpose:
The General Assistance (GA) Program helps people through difficult times by reducing financial barriers to basic needs and restoring stability, and hope through compassionate and equitable support.

Goal:

We believe in the power of community—people helping people—to create lasting change. The General Assistance Program exists to support residents in times of need by addressing financial barriers that obstruct stability and access to basic necessities. Through compassionate, comprehensive case management, we provide equitable and fiscally responsible assistance in accordance with the law, serving as a bridge and partner as individuals navigate transitional challenges related to education, health, and employability—restoring stability, dignity, and hope while strengthening the resilience of our community.

About:

The General Assistance Program, mandated by the State of Illinois and funded by Evanston taxpayers, assists individuals who are ineligible for any other state or federal financial assistance programs and do not have income or the means to meet their basic needs. It partners with City programs and community organizations to help individuals become employment-ready and self-sufficient.
