Law

The Law Department serves as the primary legal advisor to the City’s elected officials, departments, and boards and commissions.

The department represents the City in litigation brought by or against the City and handles matters related to land acquisition and disposition, assessments, and the prosecution of non-jailable Illinois Vehicle Code and City ordinance violations, including housing violations. The Law Department also drafts and reviews all ordinances, resolutions, and City contracts. It represents the City as a municipal entity and does not provide legal services or advice to private individuals or businesses.
