Applications Now Open for Sustain Evanston Grants

The application period for this year's Sustain Evanston Grant Program is now open. The goal of this funding program is to help local businesses, nonprofits, and public buildings adopt more sustainable practices that support the City’s Climate Action & Resilience Plan (CARP). The program not only reduces operating costs but also enhances the capacity to provide eco-friendly solutions to the community.

Financial Boost for Evanston Organizations

Organizations can now apply for grants of up to $25,000 to finance sustainability initiatives. Funding is limited and will be granted on a rolling basis. Those who applied in previous years and did not receive the full $25,000 are encouraged to reapply.

Changes to the Program

Due to decreased funding, most funds will go toward buildings covered by the Healthy Buildings Ordinance (HBO), with some allocated to waste projects. HBO building projects should focus on energy efficiency or electrification.

Building project examples include:

  • Building audits to improve energy efficiency
  • Door, window, or insulation improvements
  • Adoption of all-electric and Energy Star appliances such as heat pumps, refrigerators, induction cooktops, and more

Waste project examples include:

  • Integration of composting or recycling services
  • Implementation of reusable takeout containers

How to Participate

Businesses applying for building improvements should:

  1. See if your property or business is included by checking the list of buildings covered under the Healthy Buildings Ordinance.
  2. Complete a free ComEd facility assessment. A business can apply to the Sustain Evanston program only once the assessment is complete. An assessment completed in the last three years is acceptable.

  3. Apply for the Sustain Evanston grant!
