City Issues Fraud Alert Following Recent Attempted Scam Reports
Post Date:11/20/2025 1:52 PM
The City is issuing an urgent fraud alert to notify community members about recent reports of fraudulent activity targeting residents. Community members have reported receiving payment requests from scammers posing as City staff. These scammers attempt to collect personal information for payment purposes. The fraudulent communications often include:
- Requests for immediate payment for permitting services via wire transfer
- Threats of final action on behalf of the commissioners
The City reminds all residents that:
- The City of Evanston will never demand payment over the phone, at the door, or through wire transfer
- Legitimate employees will always present City-branded identification when conducting outreach
- Community members should never share personal or financial information without verifying
- Any email that is not from @cityofevanston.org is not from the City of Evanston
“We want our community to stay vigilant,” said City Manager Luke Stowe. “Scammers continue to evolve their tactics, but by staying informed and cautious, residents can help protect themselves and their families.”
What to Do if You Suspect Fraud:
- Do not respond to or engage with the scammer
- Do not click links or download attachments from suspicious messages
- Hang up immediately if it is a phone call
- Report incidents to the Evanston Police Department by contacting 847-866-5000
Notify the City Manager's Office if the scam involves the impersonation of City staff at communications@cityofevanston.
