Evanston Police Warn of Increase in Tap-to-Pay Scams

Post Date: 12/19/2025 1:52 PM

The Evanston Police Department is warning residents about a recent increase in tap-to-pay scams targeting credit and debit card users.

Scammers typically approach residents in public places and request donations for fictitious causes, including funerals. They ask victims to hand over a credit card or cellphone to complete a tap-to-pay transaction.

Once in possession of the card or phone, scammers are able to access victims’ financial accounts. Victims are often given a fraudulent receipt and asked to provide a signature. Shortly after the interaction, victims may receive a fraud alert, at which point the scammers have already fled the area.

How to protect yourself:

  • Never hand over your credit card or cellphone to anyone in public.
  • Be cautious of donation requests that require tap-to-pay or scanning instead of cash.
  • Regularly monitor bank and credit card statements.
  • Enable fraud alerts on financial accounts.
  • Report suspicious activity or behavior immediately.

If you believe you have been the victim of one of these scams, contact your bank or credit card company immediately and report the incident to the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5000.

Anyone with information about these scams or those involved is encouraged to contact the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5000 or submit a tip by texting CRIMES (274637) and beginning the message with EPDTIP.
