The Evanston Police Department recommends following the CLEAR method steps to help prevent burglaries:

• Call police if you see suspicious people or activity.

• Lock doors and windows on your home, garage, and vehicles.

• Encourage neighbors to stay alert and report concerns.

• Avoid having valuables visible, such as cell phones, purses, and bags.

• Record serial numbers for important property, including bicycles, televisions, and laptops.

Auto Theft Prevention Tips

Follow these steps to help prevent vehicle theft:

• Lock your vehicle. Roll up the windows and lock the doors. Take your keys with you, even when parked in a garage.

• Use your alarm or anti-theft device if your vehicle has one.

• Remove or hide valuables. Items left in plain view can attract thieves.

• Turn off your vehicle. Never leave your car running and unattended.

• Do not hide spare keys in your vehicle. Thieves know where to look.

• Do not leave valet keys inside your vehicle.
