The City of Evanston is offering warming center hours on Monday, January 19, for community members in need, as a cold weather advisory will be in effect. The Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center, located at 1823 Church St., will be available as a warming center on Monday, January 19 (MLK Day), from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Please note that the Evanston Public Library Main Branch will be also open on January 19 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The City will provide transportation for those seeking warmth at the Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center. Those in need of information, transportation to the warming center, or shelter outside of these hours should call the 311 Center at 847-448-4311 (or dial 3-1-1 while in Evanston) between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., or the Evanston Police Department's non-emergency service desk at 847-866-5000 (open 24/7).
Please review the following safety tips for extremely cold weather:
Personal Safety
- Wear several loose, lightweight layers, waterproof outer shells, a hat, scarf, and mittens (warmer than gloves).
- Minimize time outside and take frequent breaks indoors.
- Cover ears, face, hands, and feet, as frostbite can happen quickly.
- Drink warm fluids (broth, tea) and eat energy-rich foods; avoid alcohol and caffeine.
- Stretch and take breaks when shoveling snow to prevent overexertion.
- Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
Home & Utilities
- Have emergency kits, batteries, and flashlights ready
- Insulate pipes, open cabinet doors to expose them to warm air, and disconnect hoses.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.
- Use generators outdoors, away from windows.
Community & Pets
- Check on elderly neighbors, people with disabilities, and those living alone.
- Use 311 or local services for well-being checks if needed.
- Keep pets indoors, provide warm shelter, and ensure food/water don't freeze.
