New 25 MPH Speed Limit Now in Effect on Emerson Street

The City has announced that it has lowered the speed limit on Emerson Street between McCormick Boulevard and Greenbay Road from 30 mph to 25 mph. This is an implementation of Ordinance 50-O-26, adopted by the City Council on July 13, to improve roadway safety for all users. 

To ensure a smooth transition, the City provided notice via changeable message signs on the eastbound approach just east of McCormick Boulevard and the westbound approach just west of the intersection of Asbury Avenue and Emerson Street beginning July 24. 

New permanent signage was installed, featuring Speed Limit 25 mph plaques and “New Regulation” indicators. To further increase visibility, red flags will be added to the newly installed signs to draw drivers' immediate attention to the new traffic control device.

Education and Awareness Period

The Evanston Police Department is prioritizing an initial education and awareness period to allow the community time to adjust to the lower speed limit. During this phase, officers will focus on informing drivers of the change and encouraging compliance before transitioning to standard enforcement.
