The City of Evanston operates an apprentice program to provide introductory training into careers in the water treatment, water distribution, sewer collection system maintenance, solid waste collections, street maintenance, traffic operations and urban forest management.

Looking for a new employment opportunity?  Have you considered the world of utility maintenance?

First implemented in 2009, the City of Evanston has provided paid on-the-job training to a number of Evanston residents seeking to update their job skills.  Many of these residents have gone on to successfully find full-time employment at the City of Evanston or with other employers in the water and sewer industry.  In addition, all apprentices receive the necessary training and support to receive their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

What are the minimum requirements to apply?

  1. All applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED
  2. Have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record, or have the ability to obtain one
  3. Be a resident of Evanston (Zip code 60201 or 60202)

Applicants are also required to pass a written and practical test.  Final selection is by oral interview.

Selected candidates are subject to a qualifying pre-employment medical examination and drug/alcohol screening.  Once receiving a CDL, all apprentices are subject to the City’s random drug/alcohol testing program.
