What are ADUs?

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are small independent housing units on the same lot as a standard sized residence with a kitchen, bathroom, and areas for living and sleeping. ADUs can be attached or detached from your primary residence, and can be either converted within an existing structure or new construction. ADUs are also commonly referred to as coach or carriage houses. This guide explores this flexible housing option in Evanston.

Why would I consider an ADU?

Accessory dwelling units can address a variety of living needs across generations and stages of life. ADUs are versatile and able to serve you and your family in different ways over time. By building an ADU on your property, you are also helping your community address its housing shortage.

Don't forget to register your rental!

Interested owners will need to register and have their unit inspected by the City before legally being allowed to rent. As long as the unit has no major life safety violations, existing renters will be able to stay where they are. To fill out the registration form online, please visit the Rental Registration page. If you have any questions not covered below, please email ADU@CityOfEvanston.org.
