The Aging Well Film Night will feature two short documentaries. Please stay for a short discussion following the documentaries.
Edith+Eddie (29 minutes)
Edith and Eddie, ages 96 and 95, are America’s oldest interracial newlyweds. Their unusual and idyllic love story is disrupted by a family feud that threatens to tear the couple apart. According to the film's website, the story "represents millions of American families who have experienced elder care disputes and guardianship cases. These cases are life altering, emotionally and financially depleting, and dealt with in isolation."
Edith+Eddie, a film by Laura Checkoway, produced by Thomas Lee Wright, has earned numerous awards and nominations including an Oscar nomination. Cher, the Executive Producer of Edith+Eddie proclaims that the couple were "truly in love. What happened to them is horrible - it's elder abuse and it's happening all over. We're hopeful this film can make a difference.
The Beauty of Aging (35 minutes)
The Beauty of Aging, a documentary project by Laura Schur, explodes myths about aging with stories of active, extraordinary American women older than 80 years of age. According to the film's website, there's a mythical age when women are supposedly headed downhill. The extraordinary women in this film are so engaged in their activities, curiosity, creativity, and wisdom that they are redefining old age. As part of the fastest growing population in America, these women forge a new trail for others.
The women in The Beauty of Aging Documentary Project are "exciting examples of new research that tells us that seeing positive images is good for our health and that optimism contributes to our longevity. These women show us through their creativity, sense of purpose and fearlessness, how to stay engaged in living despite life's challenges."
