Winter HeARTh Art Project Event

  • Date: 03/10/2018 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • Introduction: Participants will create embroidered or painted quilt squares that will be assembled into quilted pieces.

Evanston community members are invited to create their own embroidered or painted quilt squares at two upcoming open house events as part of the 2018 Winter HeARTh community art project, “unCovered.”

Winter HeARTh is a collaborative effort sponsored by the Evanston Arts Council that seeks to bring together the residents of Evanston during the cold, isolating winter months to collectively make an art project. Participants in the 2018 project will be prompted to consider what it means to be "covered/uncovered" by their community. They will be able to respond both positively and negatively, and then embroider or paint their answers on the squares.

The squares will be assembled into collectively made quilted pieces that will become garments for empowerment, celebrating the community’s strengths while honoring its weaknesses. The quilt or garment will be worn at a future community empowerment event, followed by installation on site.

The first “unCovered,” workday is Sunday, February 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd. The second workday is Saturday, March 10, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Reba Place Church, 620 Madison St. No experience is needed. Participants can drop by one or both events to learn embroidery basics, paint patterns, and participate in the discussion.
