On July 24, 2017 at 4:00 p.m., members of the City Council, local stakeholders and members of the media are invited to a program presented by members of the Evanston Police Department on body cameras. The program will be held at the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, Room 2402.
The presentation will provide an overview of the body camera program, explain the operational and technical aspects of the camera system, display videos of incidents that were captured on camera and answer any questions.
In October 2016, the Evanston Police Department along with the Northwestern University Police Department received a federal grant to assist in the implementation of a body worn camera program at each agency. In June 2016, the Evanston Police Department entered the pilot phase of the implementation process by outfitting eleven officers with body worn cameras. The Evanston Police Department believes that body worn cameras will:
- improve public safety
- enhance transparency, accountability and trust
- reduce complaints against officers
- enhance the prosecution of criminal cases
