The Merion and Evanston Symphony Orchestra Host Free Program/Musical Demonstration for Mahler “Resurrection” Symphony Concert
The Merion, in conjunction with the Evanston Symphony Orchestra, will host Musical Insights, a free lecture program open to the public on Friday, June 9, starting at 1:30 p.m. in the Crystal Ballroom of The Merion, 1611 Chicago Avenue, Evanston.
Lawrence Eckerling, Music Director of the ESO, and David Ellis, ESO General Manager, will discuss and demonstrate Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection”, which will be performed at the ESO concert on Sunday, June 11 at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall in Evanston by the ESO, the North Shore Choral Society, and vocal soloists Carla Janzen and Stacy Eckert. The Musical Insights presentation will also cover Mozart’s motet Ave, verum corpus for chorus, strings and organ which will open the June 11 concert.
The Merion recently received the Evanston Arts Council’s Leadership Award and is the sponsor of this popular lecture/recital series. These programs discuss the upcoming concert on the Friday afternoon prior to each ESO subscription concert. Maestro Eckerling and ESO General Manager David Ellis use recordings, DVDs, and the piano to demonstrate musical ideas and themes.
The program lasts about an hour and concludes with a question-and-answer session and free refreshments, and an invitation to tour The Merion’s newly- opened tower addition.
