EPD: Catalytic Converter Marking Event

  • Date: 05/15/2022 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM
  • Location: South Lot Parking Garage at Northwester Campus
    1847 Campus Dr.

Catalytic converter thefts continue to be a concern across the country and can have a major financial impact on vehicle owners. The catalytic converter is a part of a vehicle's exhaust system and can be costly to replace. Many police departments are working with residents to help take preventive measures to deter this crime. Catalytic converters are stolen because of the value of the precious metals they contain. Having a marked catalytic converter may help to deter theft.

On Sunday, May 15, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,  the Evanston Police Department will be hosting a second catalytic converter marking event. A previous event was held in November 2021 where nearly 200 vehicles were marked. None of vehicle owners that participated in the November event have reported having their catalytic converter stolen.

EPD Officers will use spray paint to mark the catalytic converter under your vehicle, making it less desirable for potential theft. Paint will only be visible from underneath the vehicle and will not affect operation. This event is free and open to Evanston residents only, and to members of the Northwestern University community.

Pre-registration for the event is required and attendees must present ID for proof of residency upon checking in. Registration for this event is limited to the vehicles in this area most commonly affected by catalytic converter theft: Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Ford, Jeep, Kia

The event will be held on the south end of the Northwestern campus in the south lot parking garage (1847 Campus Drive), directly north of the Segal Visitor Center.
