Mrs. Cate O’Leary and her cow have long been accused of igniting the fire which destroyed Chicago in 30 hours. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, was an inevitable result of mud, wood, drought, bad luck and a willful relentless wind. A forty-year- old city was burned to ash. Yet, like the Phoenix of old, the city of Chicago was rebuild from ashes by hardy folk with vision, generosity and imagination.
