Eco Corner: City's Residential Recycling Cart Expansion Project Completed
In April 2009, the City began the roll-out of its new, larger recycling containers to all residential (1 to 4 units) refuse and recycling customers. The project, which was partially funded through an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IL DCEO) grant of $120,000, will increase the amount of recyclable materials the City is able to collect. Illinois ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program Starts Jan. 31
The State has announced guidelines for the Illinois ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program. Illinois will receive nearly $12.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to implement the program.
The Illinois ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program will provide consumers with a point-of-sale rebate on ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, room air conditioners, and water heaters, as well as highly efficient heating and air conditioning systems. Full Story

Free Weatherization
The State of Illinois has received over $242 million from the federal government to ramp up its IL Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP) to improve the energy efficiency of homes and apartments for income-eligible households. An energy efficient home is more comfortable in winter and summer and less expensive to maintain because it uses less energy to heat and cool. Full Story

Reminder of City Ordinances Pertaining to Display of Signs
As the February 2nd elections swiftly approach, the City of Evanston would like to remind residents of ordinances pertaining to the display of signs within city limits. While the City recognizes the importance of political signs in the exercise of free speech, the following restrictions are in place:
- Signs, including any political advertisement or poster, are strictly prohibited from being posted to any curbstone, flagstone, sidewalk, street, lamppost, tree, telephone pole, or any other structure within the limits of any street in the City unless the structure is specifically meant for political signs (1957 Code, sec. 3-7; amd. 1979 Code)
- Residents may post political or campaign signs on their own private property as long as the signs do not exceed six (6) square feet. The signs must be removed within seven (7) days after the election. (Ord. 10-0-87)
- Signs cannot be posted on City right-of-ways or any other City property.
- Any signs illegally posted will be removed by City staff. Signs will be placed behind the Civic Center for one week for pick-up, after which they will be disposed of.

Robert Crown Skater Wins Bulgaria Junior National Figure Skating Championship
Manol Atanassov is the 2010 Bulgaria Junior National Men's Figure Skating Champion. He won the title on January 10. Atanassov has been skating at Evanston's Robert Crown Center since 2006 and is eighteen-years-old. He was the Nutcracker Prince in the Center's annual production of "Nutcracker on Ice" in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Full Story

Public Art Dedication at Maple Ave. Garage
"Encounter," the new sculpture atop the Maple Avenue Garage, will be dedicated at 5:30 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 18. Created by artist Hubertus von der Goltz, "Encounter" features two figures delicately balancing and moving toward each other. The sculpture symbolizes the coming together of people from different cultures and walks of life just as the public below will encounter each other on the sidewalks of Evanston as they head for work, shop, take in a movie or go to dinner. The number of confirmed H1N1 cases is steadily declining across the nation as an increasing number of vaccinations are administered. In Cook County, the number of influenza-like illness related hospitalizations fell from 350 three weeks ago to 241 two weeks ago, and efforts to contain the influenza-like illness are still underway. Evanston Receives H1N1 Vaccinations
The Evanston Health and Human Services Department is releasing its initial schedule for H1N1 vaccination clinics.
“We have received a small shipment of our order, and we believe it will be enough to open school based clinics and a few community clinics for the target groups who are most at risk from the virus,” said Evonda Thomas, Director of Health and Human Services. “The department has received about 5,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine in the multi-dose, injectable form and 5,000 nasal spray of the live attenuated vaccine.”

Although Daniel Burnham probably never spoke the famous words, "Make no little plans", Chicago area planners, politicians, architects and reformers have long taken them as a commandment. At what point do Big Plans become counter-productive? Do we neglect what's already been built--which requires maintenance and adjustment--in the rush to the next Big Plan? Main Library Undergoing Streetscape Improvement Project
The City of Evanston has contracted for streetscape improvements on Orrington Avenue and Church Street adjacent to the Main Library. The purpose of the Library Streetscape Improvement Project is to enhance pedestrian mobility and safety on Church and Orrington in front of the library. "Contest Your Parking Ticket Online" is Back!
Beginning October 9, 2009, the online contest option for parking citations will again be available through the City of Evanston homepage. Recipients of parking citations may contest a parking citation in-person before a hearing officer; by mail through the provision of a written statement and documentary evidence; and online through an electronic submittal of statement of events and digital evidence. Block Museum Exhibit: Robert Motherwell: An Attitude Toward Reality, From the Collection of the Walker Art Center
On display through Dec. 6
A member of the New York School of painters that included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell helped define 20th-century American abstract art. His work explored themes both intimate, such as a series of collages incorporating personal items like cigarette packets and pieces of mail, and international, like his Elegies to the Spanish Republic, a subject he reworked in various formats throughout his life. Organized by the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, this exhibition includes more than 40 drawings, collages, prints, and paintings from the artist’s decades-long career. Bike Registration Oct. 4
During the Bike-the-Ridge event on Sunday, October 4, graduates of the Evanston Police Academy will again be registering bicycles on behalf of the Evanston Police Department from 9 a.m. to noon. City Receives $720,000 in Federal Funds
The State of Illinois has awarded Evanston $720,000 to fund the reconstruction of the lakefront bike path from Lee Street to Clark Street. Awarded to the City's Parks Division, the funding is given through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP), which uses federal funds to promote transportation enhancements, such as bike trails. Annual Duck Race & Pluck Saturday Sept. 26th
This fund raiser for the Evanston Environmental Association (EEA) is a rubber duck “race” around the Dawes Park lagoon. Ducks travel on waves created by volunteers with paddles.

McDaniel Ave. Closed at Central St. to 9/18
McDaniel Avenue from Central Street to the east-west alley north of Harrison Street (half a block) will be closed to install a new sewer line beginning September 16th until Friday, September 18th. Lincoln Street, Lincolnwood Drive and Central Street are the designated detour routes during the working hours.

Bike the Ridge on October 4
Pull out the bikes and park the cars. Bikes rule when Bike the Ridge returns Sunday morning, Oct. 4. For three hours, from 9 a.m. to noon, bicyclists can bike a 2-mile stretch of Ridge Avenue, from Howard Street to Church Street, a road normally closed to bicycles. Full Story

Evanston Children's Theatre Holds Auditions
The Evanston Children's Theatre will hold auditions September 15-17 for its fall production of "Twinderella," a hilarious send-up of "Cinderella," written by Charlie Lovett. Tiki being carved at Evanston lakefront
Hawaiian artist Johnnie "Keoni" Durant is spending his summer vacation visiting friends and carving an elaborate tiki in Centennial Park along Evanston's lakefront. Durant is well-known for his traditional Hawaiian sculpture and jewelry, which can be found in private collections and galleries, and on hotel properties and movie sets. This summer he is drawing daily crowds as he carves the larger-than-life-size tiki, which he plans on giving to the City of Evanston as a gift. Full Story

Home Grown Artists September 12
Home Grown Artists began in 2005 as a showcase for Evanston artists and their work at the busy and thriving Farmers' Market. In 2005 a survey funded by the Illinois Arts Council and the Evanston Community Foundation determined that Evanston has ten times the national average of artists living and working here. Ten times! 75% of them support themselves with their art. And in the year of the survey, artists generated $25 million in the Evanston economy. Full Story
Community Block Grant Applications Online July 31
The City of Evanston is accepting applications for 2010/2011 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for housing, public services, public facilities improvements and economic development and job creation activities. CDBG is a federal grant program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The City gets approximately $2 million in funding each year to provide decent affordable housing, a suitable living environment and an economic opportunity for low- and moderate-income Evanston residents. Applications are due at the City’s Planning Division by Friday, September 18 at 5 p.m. The 2010/2011 fiscal year runs from March 1, 2010 to February 28, 2011. Full Story
Half-Price Beach Token Sale Begins August 1
Evanston and Skokie residents can buy season beach tokens for half price, or $15 each, beginning Saturday, August 1. The half-price rate for a nonresident is $27. Daily beach passes will continue to be sold at beach entrances for $8 for those age 12 and older and $6 for children age 1-11. Children under one year of age are admitted free. Tokens can be purchased at the Dempster St. beach office, open daily, as well as all community centers and the Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave. Proof of residency is required at the time of purchase. Free Youth Fishing Program
Once again this summer, young anglers, age 5 to 15, can grab a pole and fish for free on Saturday mornings at the pond in Lovelace Park, located on Gross Point Road at Thayer St. Sponsored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, this is a catch-and-release program designed to give youth a chance to experience firsthand the fun of fishing. IEPA Notice of Intent to Issue a Categorical Exclusion
