Emergency Communication Bracelet Program

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and to align with Evanston’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion, we are excited to present the City’s new Emergency Communication Bracelet Program. This program is designed for residents with disabilities who may have unique needs related to communication and safety during emergency situations, such as Autistic individuals, individuals with dementia, and individuals with other kinds of hidden disabilities.

This program is a collaboration between the City’s Police Department, Fire Department, CARE Team, and the Parks & Rec Inclusion & Accessibility Division. Goals of the program include increasing residents with disabilities' sense of safety and connection with emergency responders, and providing first responders with a visual alert about an individual’s potential needs. This voluntary program allows residents with disabilities or their guardians to obtain a bracelet with a unique ID number that links to essential emergency information for the individual.

The light blue bracelet reads "City of Evanston" and includes a metal faceplate listing the Evanston Police non-emergency number and the individual's assigned unique ID number. Upon approval by the individual/guardian, it can include additional important details related to an individual's needs during emergency situations. Any information linked to an individual's ID number is kept confidential and accessed only by first responder staff via a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) database.

This information will enhance the first responder's ability to provide the highest quality service and support to the individual, including outreach to emergency contacts, best means of communication with an individual, and/or likes or dislikes of an individual to allow for an enhanced sense of safety, connection, and comfort during an emergency situation.

This program enhances the City’s already-existing Premise Alert and Hidden Disability Sunflower programs.
