Who is required to apply for a Tree Preservation permit?

Any person or company performing any construction, or other activities, within 25 feet of any public or private tree is required to apply for a permit. This construction may be in the City of right of way, in a front yard, side yard, or back yard. The City will evaluate the request and issue a permit when the work is expected to impact a tree. In the majority of cases, the work will impact some portion of the tree -- most commonly the roots.

OR

Any property owner or company removing a tree 6" DBH (diameter) or larger on private property is required to apply for a permit.

What is the cost of a permit?

The cost of a tree preservation depends on whether it will impact public or private trees, but is usually $50-$125. If the proposed activity will significantly impact more than one tree, there may be a permit cost per tree. Parkway plantings and tree care companies that are maintaining City trees at the request of the homeowner are not charged for a permit, although they are required to obtain a permit.

The permit holder may be responsible for planting replacement trees or paying a fee-in-lieu when a tree is removed.

How do I apply for a Tree Canopy Preservation permit?

Tree preservation permit requests must be submitted with a diagram that clearly shows where the work is located, along with any trees within 25ft of the work. Trees on neighboring properties should also be included.

If the project is completed in conjunction with a Building Permit application, submit the diagram and other required information along with the building permit application.

If the project is completed in conjunction with a ROW Permit application, submit the diagram and other required information along with the ROW Permit Application.

If you are removing a tree on your parcel not in conjunction with a construction project, click here to apply for a Tree Preservation Permit. Provide the reason the tree is being removed, i.e. diseased, dying or hazardous. Submitting photos as an attachment is recommended.

How do I pay for a Tree Preservation Permit?

Permits may be paid by clicking here or in person at the City of Evanston Collector’s office.

What if my tree removal is an emergency?

The City prioritizes the safety of its community. Trees that are imminently threatening the safety of people and/or property may be removed and a permit will be issued retroactively. The property owner and tree care company should take pictures and document the emergency. These pictures should be submitted to the City during the permit request process.
