North Downtown Plan

At the February 22, 2016 Planning and Development Committee meeting, committee members identified a potential need for a “North Downtown Area” neighborhood plan and directed staff to investigate a planning process. On April 18, 2016, staff presented preliminary information on the proposed “North Downtown Planning Area” and was directed by the Committee to obtain additional information and begin community outreach for resident and stakeholder feedback. At the September 26, 2016 meeting, City Council directed staff to amend the 2009 Downtown Plan to include 5 new subareas within the planning study boundaries. The new subareas would help guide future development in this area just north of downtown.

June 15, 2016 Community Meeting

On June 15, 2016 the City of Evanston held the second of two community meetings for the north downtown planning area.

This meeting was attended by approximately 35 people. Following up on the May meeting, the goal was to share initial feedback gathered and to obtain preferences on the types of development scale and building design/materials the community would like to see in future development. Attendees were able to mark on aerial maps the type of use and density they preferred in different locations within the proposed boundaries, whether they be residential (yellow), mixed-use (red), institutional (white), or office (blue). May 18, 2016 Community Meeting

On May 18, 2016, the City of Evanston convened the first of the two community meetings for the north downtown planning area.  

The meeting was attended by approximately 75 residents, community stakeholders, aldermen and staff. The goal of this meeting was to gather feedback for the north downtown planning boundary and major themes that the community would want the area plan to focus on. A summary of the meeting and proposed boundary maps are below.

Upcoming Meetings

Staff will be presenting the proposed plan at the April 17, 2017  Planning & Development Committee meeting. The meeting will be held at 7:15 P.M. in the James C. Lytle City Council Chambers
