About Evanston

No Mower Pollution

No "Mower" Pollution Program Runs April 22, 2008 (Earth Day) through September 1, 2008 (Labor Day)

PROGRAM GOAL: TO GET GAS GUZZLING, OIL EATING, AIR POLLUTING MOWERS OFF THE STREET

In contrast to the 2006 one-day drop-off and rebate program, the voluntary 2008 program allows drop-offs at your convenience and purchases of environmentally-friendly mowers - lawn care services, too! - from Earth Day (April 22) through Labor Day (September 1).

Why is the Evanston Health and Human Services Department offering this voluntary program?

Goal 5 of the City's Strategic Plan is to protect and optimize the City’s natural resources and built environment, leading by example through sustainable practices and behaviors. The program can help improve the air quality for all Evanstonians but its overall success depends on you!

Who can participate?

Residents of the EPA’s Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin) can participate, but the drop-off sites listed here are convenient for Evanston and nearby residents.

How does the program work?

There are several ways but all require that you turn in a gas-powered mower to participate.

Drop Off Only

If you are not interested in purchasing a non-gasoline-powered mower or contracting with an environmentally-friendly lawn care service company, you can take your lawn mower to one of the approved nearby drop-off locations. Some require you dispose of the gas and oil beforehand; some can do it for you.

Need Help Getting Your Mower to a Drop-Off Location?

The Evanston Streets and Sanitation crew will pick up your mower (but it must be empty of all gas and oil) on your regular refuse collection day if you put it at the curb. If you have questions, call Streets & Sanitation at 847.866.2940.

DID YOU KNOW?

Lawn mower exhaust is full of hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds (V.O.C.s). An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study found that approximately 9% of some types of air pollution nationwide comes from the small engines required to run lawn and garden equipment. In metropolitan areas, the concentration of lawns causes this number to increase in some instances to 33%.
