2008 Award Winners
Margherita Andreotti and Shorefront were presented the 2008 Mayor’s Award for the Arts at the State of the City luncheon on February 13, 2009.
A former member of the Evanston Public Art Committee, Andreotti is being honored for her devoted efforts to document and bring attention to the status of historic art in Evanston schools. She completed a lengthy report of public art in school buildings within Districts 65 and 202. Some of the objects date back to the Works Progress Administration of the 1930s. It is hoped the report will be a springboard for efforts to preserve and protect this art legacy.
Spearheaded by Morris E. (Dino) Robinson, Jr., Shorefront is a historical society whose goal is to provide surrounding communities with information, publications and exhibits of African American history. Shorefront preserves and collects artifacts and stores them so that they can be exhibited. It has presented traveling exhibits throughout the North Shore, including at Family Focus and the Civic Center.
Past award recipients include Richard Halstead and Open Studio Project, Bea Rashid of Dance Center Evanston, Eve Alfille of the Alfille Bijoux d’Art, Art Encounter, Chie Curley and Barbara Goldsmith of Noyes Gallery, Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, Light Opera Works, Northlight Theatre, Gus Giordano, North Shore Choral Society, Evanston Art Center, Evanston Symphony Orchestra, Barbara Blades, Ron Isaacson of Mindscape Gallery, Susan A. Manning and the Music Institute of Chicago, just to name a few. The 2007 recipients were John Szostek and The Musical Offering.
The award is sponsored by the City of Evanston Cultural Arts Division and the Evanston Chamber of Commerce.
Leadership Award
The Evanston Arts Council’s Arts & Business Committee named Romano Brothers & Co. in Evanston as the second recipient of its annual Leadership Award. The award honors an Evanston business that has been very supportive of the arts in Evanston, either financially or through the provision of in-kind services, or both. This award also was presented at the February 13, 2009 Mayor's State of the City Address and Mayor's Award for the Arts Luncheon.
The financial investments services company was chosen because of its ongoing financial and in-kind support for the Evanston Symphony Orchestra, Light Opera Works and other arts organizations including the Evanston Art Center, Evanston Dance Center, Theatre and Interpretation Center at Northwestern University, and First Night Evanston.
“Romano Brothers & Co. has shown consistent leadership and generosity,” said Arts & Business Committee co-chair Penny Rotheiser.
The 2007 Leadership Award was presented to Whole Foods Market in Evanston.
