RODENTS

Prevention is the best way to avoid rodent infestation. If there are no food sources and no conditions that encourage rodents to make their home on your property, rodent activity will be eliminated or decreased.

Rodent Prevention Checklist

  1. Keep all garbage in closed containers.
  2. Replace damaged garbage cans and covers.
  3. Cover all food sources: dog & cat food, birdseed, & water.
  4. Pick up dog feces. (It's another food source.)
  5. Remove wood piles, weeds and other piles of debris.
  6. Close any openings to your home or garage. Repair screen & garage doors.
  7. Report the presence of rats to the Health Department.

Remember, a licensed professional pest control operator is sometimes the best solution to the problem. Regular treatment and on-site inspections for burrows and rodent activity keep you in control of the situation.

About refuse carts

Public works can evaluate the condition of your carts and replace or repair those that are in poor condition. One refuse cart is provided at no charge; additional carts might be needed to properly manage your property. Call 847.866.2940 to discuss your situation.

About rodenticides

  • Only Illinois Department of Public Health Licensed Pest Control Technicians, such as Health Department staff, are permitted to apply rodenticide on the public way.
  • Property owners may only apply rodenticide on their own property; they may not apply rodenticide on the public way or on someone else's property.
  • All rodenticides, regardless of packaging, should be placed either in locations that children, pets, wildlife and domestic animals cannot get to or they should be in EPA-approved temper-resistant bait boxes.
