As part of Older Americans Month, Evanston’s Aging Well Conference takes place at the North Shore Hotel on Friday, May 8,  2009.  This free, half-day conference for older persons and those who care for them presents nine new workshops as well as two returning favorites for the opening and closing sessions. 

 

*There is no fee for this conference; all costs are underwritten by the collaborating and supporting agencies.

2009 Aging Well Film Festival

Aging Well and Reeltime will be presenting the award-winning film “The Cats of Mirikitan:”

Wednesday, May 13, 2009     7:30 p.m.

Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave, Evanston

 

Blending beauty and humor with tragedy and loss, this is a documentary which begins with an elderly homeless artist in New York City. Eighty-year-old Jimmy Mirikitani survived the trauma of WWII internment camps, Hiroshima, and homelessness by creating art. But when 9/11 threatens his life on the New york City streets and a local filmmaker brings him to her home, the two embark on a journey to confront Jimmy's painful past. An intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing powers of friendship and art, this documentary won the Audience Award at its premiere in the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. A discusion will follow the film.

 

The film "Evanston's Living History" will also be presented

Wednesday, May 27, 2009     7:30 p.m.

North Shore Retirement Hotel, 1611 Chicago Ave, Evanston

 

This film documents the history and accomplishments of Evanston's African American residents and includes interviews with Mayor Lorraine Morton, Alderman Delores Holmes, Allen "Bo" Price, William Logan, Rose Jourdain and others.

A panel discussion will follow with the film's director and Evanston residents featured in the film.

 

No registration is necessary, but seating is limited.
